Hopes down the fucking drain. That ace could not have helped you. Mike: You're right that the ace didn't help me.

Teddy KGB: [throwing cards and chips] Motherfucker! That is it! Grama: That's it? What the fuck you talkin' about, "that's it"?

Take him out, Teddy! Teddy KGB: Nyet! No more! No, not tonight! This son of bitch, all night he check, check, check!

He trapped me! Mike: Well, you feelin' satisfied now, Teddy? Teddy KGB: Nyet, nyet. He beat me. Straight up. Pay him. Pay that man his money.

Mike: [narrating] People insist on calling it luck. Does it have my name on it? I don't know. But I'm going to find out.

TV Shows. A little drunk on its own arcane exotica as a gambling movie, Rounders is a film that takes us inside a world of high-stakes card players but falls short on such essentials as character development, relationships, that sort of thing.

Still, it is a real curiosity, written by a couple of guys David Levien and Brian Koppelman who appear to know something about the dark underbelly of card hustling for fun and profit.

Matt Damon stars as a reluctant law student who can't put aside his subterranean career of playing poker and blackjack for big money.

After he loses his post-grad nest egg to a weird Russian kingpin John Malkovich --and also loses his disgusted girlfriend Gretchen Mol in the process--Damon's character turns to an unreliable old buddy Edward Norton for a dangerous game of sharking wherever there happens to be a game underway: frat boys, cops, bad dudes, you name it.

Norton appears to be living out every young actor's fantasy of re-creating Robert De Niro's prototypical head case in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets, and while his performance is burdened by obvious quotation marks, his estimable talent still shines through.

Damon's charm and intelligence bring some oomph to the curiously flat proceedings, and while his hushed, soul-bearing scenes with Martin Landau as a law professor who takes a shine to the kid seem gratuitous, they're still nice to watch.

Behind all this is director John Dahl Red Rock West , who is not exactly at the top of his game here but who brings his distinctive toughness to the crime-noir tone.

Director's John Dahl's effective direction is what keeps you interested and the tone of the film that of a film noir, which adds so much to the film's atmosphere.

The cast are wonderful in their parts, and the plot is very engaging, thrilling from start to finish.

Edward Norton and Matt Damon are terrific here, and they both have intense on-screen chemistry. Rounders is a must see for poker fans, and with a well crafted script, great acting and a memorable cast of talented actor that star alongside Norton and Damon, this is an accomplished film that will leave you wanting to see it again and again.

If you enjoy a thrilling story with effective direction and a great cast, this film is for you. Rounders reminded me of the Mars Callahan film Pool hall Junkies, but this was a much better acted film with a more developed plot.

Enjoyable if you're a fan of poker and to the common film goers looking for a terrific flick that is sure to electrify the viewer.

Well crafted from beginning to end, Rounders is a wild ride and even if it lacks in some areas, there's enough good elements at work on-screen that make the film overcome its flaws and with an effective pacing set by director John Dahl, this is a well executed hustler flick that is very cool to watch.

With a great script and wonderful acting, Rounders is a film that you won't soon forget. Thrilling from the first frame onwards, Dahl's film delivers, and is never dull and highly entertaining.

If you enjoy these types of films, definitely give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. Alex r Super Reviewer. Jul 27, Now everyone seems to have caught it and it has fallen into the realm of being overrated.

It wasn't bad but it isn't great. John B Super Reviewer. Jun 14, Really good. I hadn't even really heard of this film aside from the name once or twice, but just decided to watch it one day out of boredom, which ended up being a great decision.

Great cast, and storyline. Check this film out. Stephen S Super Reviewer. Nov 29, It may have its flaws, but "Rounders" is by far one of the most entertaining films I've ever had to sit through.

From the wonderful, genuine performances of its actors to the clever, snappy dialogue of its script, "Rounders" is well-made all around, and it's so perfectly paced that not once did I find myself checking the time.

The film has its problems, and I'm not a huge fan of the ending, but I greatly enjoyed myself while watching it. Stephen E Super Reviewer.

You'll be back in the game before you know it. Grama: I consolidated your outstanding debt. Worm: where did you get the scrach for that, youv been rolling fags in the village.

If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker. Mike McDermott: If you had it to do all over again, knowing what would happen, would you make the same choice?

Lester 'Worm' Murphy: Where did you come up with the scratch for that? You've been rolling fags in the Village again, haven't you?

Worm: Rolled up aces over kings. Check-raising stupid tourists and taking huge pots off of them. Playing all-night high-limit Hold'em at the Taj, "where the sand turns to gold.

What, are they the luckiest guys in Las Vegas? Worm: Hey! Worm: I guess the sayings' true. In the poker game of life, women are the rake man.

Mike McDermott: It's like the nature channel Mike: All right, listen. Things haven't been so smooth on the home front, so tone it down a little, all right?

Worm: Stacks and towers of checks I can't even see over. Playing all-night, high-limit hold'em at the Taj, "where the sand turns to gold.

Mike: Fifteen grand in five days, I can do that. I've gone on rushes like that before. Worm: Uh, under optimum conditions with a bank roll.

Maybe, maybe. Worm: Nah, that's only between us. We might as well play the fucking lotto. Worm: I know you know this feeling.

You know this feeling very well. I mean, you got your table all set up, your fork, your knife, your A1 sauce Worm: Look, I'm sorry we got banged up, I took a shot and missed.

It happens. Worm: And it doesn't happen to you? You're the one that flushed his whole bank roll on one hand. Worm: How is that different? What makes you so fucking special?

Why are all your moves so smart and noble and I'm always the idiot piece of shit? You act like you're only one with any ambition.

Worm: No, I don't think like you, you always think you can beat the game straight up. That's not me, and I'm always going to look for that edge, always.

Mike: Alright, what's the edge now? We owe fifteen grand in a day and we're broke, what the fuck do we do? Petrovsky: For generations, men of my family have been rabbis in Israel; before that, in Europe.

It was to be my calling. I was quite a prodigy, the pride of my yeshiva. The elders said I had a forty-year-old's understanding of the Midrash by the time I was twelve.

But by the time I was thirteen, I knew I could never be a rabbi. Petrovsky: Not to my family.

My parents were destroyed, devastated by my decision. My father sent me away, to New York, to live with distant cousins.

Eventually, I found my place, my life's work. Petrovsky: Well, I immersed myself fully, I studied the minutiae, I learned everything I could about the law.

I mean, I felt deeply inside that it was what I was born to do. Petrovsky: No. I always hoped that I would find some way to change their minds, but they were inconsolable.

My father never spoke to me again. Petrovsky: What choice? The last thing I took away from the yeshiva is this: We can't run from who we are.

Our destiny chooses us. Mike: Uh, you know what? I got my five grand here. That's just fine by me. I'm going home. Teddy KGB: Fine.

It's a fucking joke anyway. After all, I am paying you with your money. Teddy KGB: Your money I am still up twenty grand Mike: [Narrating] They're trying to goad me, trying to own me.

But this isn't a gunfight. It's not about pride or ego. It's only about money. I can leave now, even with Grama and KGB That's the safe play.

I told Worm you can't lose what you don't put in the middle. But you can't win much either. In the end, Ben and Howdy end up right back where they started, with only the roan to show for their efforts.
